Parental Guidance Strategies

Parental guidance is a cornerstone of the work I do as a clinical psychologist, particularly when families are facing challenges like anxiety, behavioral issues, or a young adult who’s struggling to launch into independence. My approach goes beyond simply applying therapeutic techniques. It’s about deeply understanding your unique family dynamics, values, and concerns, and then tailoring my guidance to fit your specific situation.


For instance, imagine a family where the parents are struggling to manage their young adult child's anxiety. The child has been avoiding responsibilities, and the parents feel stuck between wanting to be supportive and fearing that they're enabling the behavior. In this case, it’s essential to use evidence-based approaches, like Non-Violent Resistance (NVR) or Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions (SPACE), which have been shown to be effective in similar situations. However, I also take the time to listen to the parents’ experiences and concerns. Perhaps they’ve noticed that their child responds better to certain types of communication or that cultural factors play a significant role in their family’s dynamics.
